Yavuz Sultan Selim (1.Selim) - Padişahlar Serisi Defter
While he was still a prince, Sultan Selim Khan established a close bond with the janissary corps and began to live like a janissary. That's why he never grew a beard throughout his life and adopted the raider moustache, adhering to the Janissary tradition. According to the rumor, he disguised himself as a dervish and appeared before the arch -enemy of the Ottoman Empire , Shah Ismail, and played chess with him in order to better understand the war tactics . Shah Ismail, whom no one dared to beat until then due to fear of death, had the title of "undefeated chess player", but Prince Selim Khan defeated him in a short time. Rumor has it that, although Ismail could not accept this defeat and sent his men to the inn where he was staying the next day to call the dervish, the dervish, that is, Prince Selim , had already left the Safavid lands and returned to his homeland having received the necessary information. Sultan Selim Khan, who chose a simple life away from ostentation throughout his life , ate his meals from wooden plates and did not wear ostentatious clothes like his ancestors or grandchildren. He is known as the "most read ruler" among the Ottoman sultans . The depiction with earrings seen everywhere does not belong to him. It is said that the particular drawing is a Safavid ambassador or Shah Ismail himself.
